Book 2 – The Bridgewater Chronicles
This second book of The Bridgewater Chronicles follows the story of the second generation of Newkirks – the children of Kevin and Cordelia.
A grown up Birdie Newkirk returns to Bridgewater, the family home in Woodhaven, Connecticut. She is poised and sophisticated in the ways of Boston society having been mentored by her Aunt Bernice and her grandmother Fanny Newkirk. In spite of being closed watched over by her family guardians, Birdie has inherited the negative traits of both her parents. It was her trying ways, evident from her toddler years that originally caused her parents to send her to Boston for strict discipline. But now Birdie returns to Bridegewater, the home she has only visited during summer breaks from school; she is ready to find love and make her mark on the world.
In her mind Birdie feels that she was abandoned by her mother when she was sent to Boston. During those years she had only been visited by her mother so infrequently she felt only an emptiness and longing in her heart that has hardened over the years.
Shortly after Birdie returns home, her mother informs her that due to aberrant behavior, a debutante presentation has been set for later that year in an effort to get Birdie married and out of the family home. What ensues on the night of the debutante ball causes a scandal of epic proportions and rocks all of Boston society! And causes Birdie to be exiled to live with family friends in Great Britain. She stays with them for two years before moving on to France. Birdie flits from the arms of one man only to land in the arms of another, leaving a trail of broken hearts behind as she locks away her own heart to keep from having it broken. Her further exploits take her to both the East and West Coasts of America, the heart of Provence, and finally to a town along the Silk Road in Turkmenistan as she searches for unconditional love. Along the way she lives life to the fullest.
Through it all Bridgewater – the house and what it stands for – remains a constant in Birdie’s life as she moves through the decades seeking the approval of her mother. And it is at Bridgewater where the third generation – Birdie’s unwanted daughter Zena – will be nurtured to face an ever-changing world.
NOTE: Zena’s story will be told in Book #3 – Catch A Falling Star – tentatively scheduled for late 2015.
