Have you ever wished you could find a little out-of-the-way café with a sea view? Have you ever wished to travel to Scotland? This gem of a book by author Jenny Colgan will bring your wishes to fruition.
We first meet Flora, a young law clerk, as she goes about her hassled life in busy London. She has a few friends and a small flat. Her work is her life, a life unlike the one she left behind her on the isle of Mure in Scotland. Oh, and Flora has a big-time crush on her boss, Joel. When an VIP client of the firm makes a request for legal representation on the isle of Mure she is tapped as being a native of the area and is sent back there to represent the firm. She is so flustered at being called upon by Joel, who heretofore hasn’t even noticed her, that all she can do is nod her agreement. Back in Mure once more we begin to see the dynamic behind Flora’s departure. There is much going on in this little agricultural corner of Scotland. But the client she represents, Colton, is not liked by the governing council of Mure yet he needs to get additional permits for his already built high-end luxury resort. When things come to a halt, Joel must travel out to Mure to untangle the snafu. Flora’s father and brothers see her return as a natural thing and she soon finds herself cooking and cleaning for the lot of them. Finding her deceased mother’s recipe book, Flora takes a turn a recreating some of the meals they had all enjoyed. Funny thing about that, she is never happier than when memories of learning from her mother as they cooked together fill her head as she bustles around the kitchen. In time and with Joel’s support she finds herself restoring a decrepit little shop near the harbor and rechristening it as a café by the sea.
I loved this book. Author Jenny Colgan takes a bleak and windswept corner of the world and makes it attractive and cozy. Her characters are imbued with realism and quirkiness – in other words they are real. The story is full of twists and turns and kept me turning pages until the wee hours of the night. This is only the second book by this author that I’ve read although there are several more; I hope to read them all. Entertaining on an emotional level, The Café by the Sea is a true romantic escape that will keep you spellbound.
