On Wednesday, October 28th, I had the privilege to visit with approximately 80 students at the Woodlawn Beach Middle School in Gulf Breeze, FL. Thanks to the wonderful magic of Skype we all spent about an hour together.
This year the students are writing short stories in the historical fiction genre and I was pleased to be able to assist them by answering their questions regarding brainstorming, research, and the actual writing of their individual stories. The students’ questions were insightful, creative, and well thought out; I’ll admit to taking my time answering several questions because they were unexpected. Teachers Heather Owens and Penelope Duffey handled the technical aspect of our Skype session and did a terrific job of containing the enthusiasm and excitement of the students’.
In previous years I had the pleasure of talking with students and came away feeling uplifted. This session reinforced that feeling for me. I hope I was able to answer all the questions and provide a bit of guidance for some of the budding writers at Woodlawn Beach Middle School.
I’m enclosing a picture of Mrs. Owens and another of the assembled students. A super inspiring session for this author – I’ve come away with ideas for several more stories!
