Lighting the Way by Liza DeStefano (Book Review)

Lighting The Way is the second collection of inspirational poems in the Wings of My Heart series by poet and author Liza DeStefano.

Ms. DeStefano’s poetry is inspired by the passing of her father in early 2018 (Wings of My Heart) and moves forward through her period of mourning (Lighting The Way). With the additional loss of her mother-in-law six months later, a new period of mourning for her family brought her chaotic emotions into the spotlight once more. But now she is dealing with not only her personal grief but that of her husband and children as well.

We’ve all been there (or will be) when our lives are shaken by the passing of a close family member. This author has chosen poetry for dealing with her grief, her gut-wrenching feeling of loss, and the myriad of emotions that accompany any death. Through her words, she finds hope and the strength to carry on not only for herself but for her family as well.

At the six-month mark of her journey through grief, Ms. DeStefano writes in the poem titled Six Months: “Take me back six months plus one day. Oh, wow. The things I would not forget to say…” We follow her as she navigates the mundane through the eyes of grief, focusing on one small thing to get through each day.

Like the author’s first book, Lighting The Way is a slim volume of inspirational poems that packs a punch. Not meant to be read in one sitting, they are to be savored individually. With the one-year anniversary of her father’s passing, this reviewer is anxious to see what lyrical words are further inspired. A perfect gift for someone who has recently lost a loved one.
