Meet Author Tami Kidd – Cozy Mystery Writer

I’d like to introduce author Tami Kidd who has written a wonderful mystery – Let Sleeping Dogs Lie – and who is about to release its much anticipated sequel. I first met Tami several years ago when I first joined the Emerald Coast Writers and we’ve been friends ever since then.  I read Tami’s book and thoroughly enjoyed it. An easy read. Here’s a link to my review of the book:  Tami’s Book .  Also here’s a link to my interview with Tami from 2012:  Tami’s Interview with Marion.   The following interview with Tami was posted on June 17th of this year on the blog of Author Angela Youriko Smith. (Be sure to check out Angela’s writings as well.)

Here is an excerpt from that interview:

…… Tami Kidd from Baker (Florida). She lives with her husband, Davy, a miniature dachshund named Millie and the small herd of cats that have adopted them. She’s blessed to have her daughter and granddaughter nearby and values the time she spends with them.

When not writing, she works full time at Hurlburt Field as a defense contractor as what some refer to as “tan pants,” because many of the contractors wear khaki pants almost daily.

Angela: Tami, when did you start writing?

Tami: I started writing journals when I was very young and continued into adulthood. I also wrote poetry and short stories, but put my writing on hold to have a family. Then later in life, much later, I discovered Nanowrimo and wrote my first novel during the challenge. I write mystery novels, some people call them “cozy mysteries.”

Angela: What inspired you to become a writer?

Let Sleeping Dogs LieTami: I don’t know that any one author inspired me to write. I just always felt a need to write. Since becoming more involved in the writing community I have read lots of different genres by authors with many different styles. Some I love and some I don’t, but I appreciate them all because I know how hard it is to put yourself on the page.

Angela: What has been the biggest challenge of your career?

Tami: Time and marketing. Writing takes time away from other things that I feel need to be accomplished such as, cleaning house, cooking, grocery shopping, laundry and bathing. Marketing is a huge challenge for self-published or indie authors. It’s full time job. Putting yourself out in the public eye is difficult and sometimes seems boastful, but it’s a necessity of getting your work out to readers.

Angela: What has been your biggest triumph?

Tami: Completing my first novel, and also when one of my poems won first place in a poetry contest. I felt validated as a writer and I think that’s a great triumph for a writer: validation.

Angela: What do you hope to achieve with the Author Meet & Greet?

Heart PagesTami: If I can inspire one person to follow their dreams to write, that would make my day. I love meeting new readers and meeting fellow writers. Anytime I have a chance to share myself with others, it’s a great day.

Angela: What is your advice to new writers?

Tami: Don’t wait till you have time to write. I let many years slip through my fingers that I wish I could get back. Don’t stop writing, even if you can only write one paragraph a day. Don’t be overly critical of your writing. The first draft is always bad, but that’s the worst your novel will ever be. Find others who love to write and share your wins and losses with them. They will understand you more than someone who doesn’t write. Find a good critique group. Edit, edit and edit some more and then send your work to a professional editor. Read.
