Throwback Thursday is the product of a semester-long assignment given to middle school students wherein they wrote a short story based on history. This would be a daunting feat for an adult writer yet these students, under the guidance of editor and teacher Heather Owens, have produced a worthy project. The stories range in length from a couple of pages to several pages of inventive, imaginative, yet fact filled stories you’re likely to encounter. It is gratifying to see that the students have learned to document their research via footnotes, an art that is mostly lost to today’s writers. The book is rather long but then one can’t recount history in just a few pages.
For readers in search of something new and different, why not give this one a try. You’ll cry or laugh as you recall the historical events in the short stories contained within. And for those of us who are a bit older, you’ll wonder when the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s became history.
Kudos once again to Heather Owens, whose tutelage has wrought such wonderful gifts as these short stories from her students.
